Nor-Tech’s recent shipment of a Rocks® based Linux® cluster to a Gas & Oil Engineering company demonstrated the speed-up/acceleration factor that Abaqus® Standard 6.12 can leverage from the use of Tesla® GPU’s made by NVidia®. The Gas & Oil Engineering company designs downhole tools which must withstand tremendous stress without breaking. FEA gives the designers confidence that their designs will withstand the extreme environments everyday operations in oilfield work demands.

Here is a basic table of some of the results, with and without GPU acceleration. Note, only Abaqus® /Standard jobs (S4B) use GPU acceleration. Even this job is on the small end when it comes to GPU. Jobs with more than 2.5 Million degrees of freedom, having more than a million equations and 3 million FLOPS are ideally suited.
