Question
- What is the important compatability info for PC3200 400 MHZ dimms on ASUS A78NX?
Answer
- Here's what our engineering staff has found with regards to using PC3200 modules on this board especially as it relates to going to 1 gig of memory using 512mb modules which is what most people are trying to do with this board.

This board has been funky with PC3200 modules since it was released. Unlike most newer boards this is a 3 slot as opposed to a 4 slot board. It has 2 different personalities. By this we mean the boards voltage requirement for PC2700 and PC3200 memory recognition are different. The board ships with it's bios set to recognize 2.5 volt modules which is standard and fine for PC2700. However, when using PC3200 modules on this board the voltage must be set for "2.6" volt. Nowhere in the manual does it mention or even hint at this.

Also, the auto detect feature on most boards would immediately detect the need for 2.6 volt when using PC3200 and just take care of it. On this board you have to manually go into the bios and set it for 2.6 volt. Once this has been done it's plug and play with 512mb pc3200 dimms in socket # 1 and # 3.

You could have (2) million dollar pcs of 512pc3200 but unless the voltage is manually changed to 2.6 volt it won't work.
