Solid state storage (SSS) is a type of non-volatile computer storage that archives and retrieves digital information using only integrated electronic circuits rather than moving magnetic or optical media to store data. This differs from the traditional electromechanical storage which records data using rotating or linearly moving media coated with magnetic material.

Because there are no mechanical parts, SSS is much faster than traditional electromechanical storage and has more consistent input/output times. SSS may take various forms such as solid state drives, solid state cards or solid state modules. Solid state drives (SSDs) deliver faster load times and are lighter and better able to withstand movement and impact. In addition, solid state drives use less energy, allowing computers to run cooler.
