Top International Supercomputing and AI Solutions for Forecasting.
The inaugural APAC HPC-AI competition was recently launched at Supercomputing Asia 2018. According to Priyankar Bhunia at OpenGov, this competition is open to university and technical institute teams from the entire APAC (Asia-Pacific) region, and includes both creating missions and addressing challenges around AI development and testing, and high-performance computing workloads.
The goal of the competition is to foster international exchange in the areas of high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI). This makes sense since HPC and AI applications share the same underlying technologies and infrastructures–new developments in HPC are adopted for AI and vice versa.
The competition consists of two parts. The first part focuses on AI, with a mission to reach the highest distributed training performance. The second part focuses on HPC with teams benchmarking the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model, a next-generation mesoscale numerical weather prediction system, designed to serve both operational forecasting and atmospheric research needs.
In addition to receiving a $4,000 cash prize, the winning team will represent APAC at the 2019 International HPC-ISC Student Cluster Competition in Germany. The competition will continue through August.
